North East Cambs Liberal Democrats select parliamentary candidate

February 25, 2010 11:33 AM

Lorna SpenceleyLiberal Democrats in the North East Cambridgeshire constituency have selected Lorna Spenceley as their prospective parliamentary candidate for the forthcoming General Election.

Lorna says: "I'm delighted to have been selected as the prospective Liberal Democrat MP for the constituency in which I live. I am looking forward to working with my local team across NE Cambridgeshire, and am keen to meet as many people as possible during the campaign. I have found that many people have fond and often personal memories of former Isle of Ely MP the late Clement Freud, and I am privileged to follow in his illustrious footsteps. The Liberal Democrats are starting this campaign from a stronger position than at any time in recent memory, and it would be a privilege to serve the residents of NE Cambridgeshire as their Liberal Democrat MP."

Originally from Jersey in the Channel Islands, Lorna (51) lives in Sutton, in the NE Cambridgeshire constituency. Lorna studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge, graduating in 1981 with a 2:1 Honours degree in English, and successfully completed an MBA with the Open University in 2003.

Lorna has previously worked in the voluntary sector, including as Deputy Chief Executive for a national charity for children with special needs, and as marketing manager of a further education college. She is currently the Liberal Democrats' training administrator and also works as administrator for the party in the East of England.

Lorna is an experienced parliamentary candidate, having contested the Harlow constituency in 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2005. A councillor in Harlow, Essex for 19 years, Lorna was leader of the Liberal Democrats on Harlow Council from 1991 to 2005, and from 2002 to 2005 was joint leader of the council during a period of no overall control. Lorna retires from her Harlow council seat in May this year.

Lorna is married to Nick, who is vice-principal of a further education college in Essex, and they have two adult children.

Lorna can be contacted at lorna@fenlandlibdems.org.uk and is also on Twitter as lornaspenceley.
