At Chatteris Annual Town Meeting on Tuesday 4 May, town councillor Christine Colbert obtained Fenland District Council leader Alan Melton's acknowledgement that the council's '3Cs' system had completely failed to address continued complaints from herself and Chatteris Town Council concerning the local problem of 'unadopted' roads and public open space.
In advance of the Annual Meeting Cllr Colbert had notified Cllr Melton that she would be asking him why Fenland District Council had still not addressed the problem of new housing estates not being properly finished by developers, despite the fact that her complaints on the matter dated back to February 2007, and she cited long standing examples in Chatteris of St Francis Drive, Farriers estate and Juniper Drive.
Councillor Melton advised that in each of these cases the developers concerned are now being pressed to ensure that public open space and roads and footpaths on each estate are completed to a standard to permit their adoption by the local authority (public open space by Fenland District Council and roads by Cambridgeshire County Council).
He further assured Cllr Colbert that steps are being taken to ensure that planning approvals issued by Fenland District Council are in future prepared and monitored in a manner to avoid the problem being repeated.
Cllr Christine Colbert said "I welcome this news and I am only sorry that it has taken so very long for Fenland District Council to acknowledge this problem and make some effort to address it, particularly as it appears to be an issue all across Fenland. I just hope that Alan Melton is true to his word and Fenland District Council now ensures that all developments are properly controlled and managed."
