Conservatives on Fenland Council have temporarily pulled back from their unpopular plan to move the taxi rank from Wisbech's Horsefair, after one Conservative councillor said the party could lose all its council seats in Fenland if they ignored opposition to the taxi rank move.
The council Cabinet decided to set aside its plan to relocate the taxi rank next to the Case pub. Instead they have agreed to ask consultants to tender for a traffic safety audit for the Horsefair area.
Liberal Democrat Dave Patrick, councillor for Kirkgate ward in Wisbech, helped collect thousands of signatures against the move in a petition presented to the council earlier this month. He said the public felt 'safe and secure' with taxis in the Horsefair, and suggested that if traffic safety were a concern, a few small and inexpensive changes could resolve this.
Cllr Patrick, who chairs the local taxi drivers' organisation, promised that taxi drivers would meet soon to discuss improved self regulation on the Horsefair.
