An extra £1.5 million government handout for front line health services across Cambridgeshire has been welcomed by Cambridge MP, Julian Huppert.
The money will be given to Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust as part of a £162 million national investment by the government.
It comes following a successful national efficiency drive and will be spent on helping people to leave hospital more quickly, get settled back at home with the support they need and to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
The funding will be allocated to Cambridgeshire PCT in recognition of the pressures on services due to the extreme weather this winter and the flu season. The PCT in turn, will transfer the money to councils across the county to spend on social care support.
Julian said: "This money will be gratefully received to help some of the county's most vulnerable people.
"It is well documented that people recover more quickly from an illness when they are in familiar surroundings with their families. This money will give people the support they need when leaving hospital and hopefully allow more people to be treated at home preventing the need for them to go into hospital in the first place.
"There are always additional pressures on hospitals during the winter season and anything that can be done to ease those pressures while ensuring people get the treatment they need in the best possible way has to be worthwhile."
