Lucy Nethsingha & North East Cambs Lib Dems

North East Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats would like to thank everyone who supported them in recent county council and mayoral elections. In the inaugural Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayoral election the Liberal Democrats finished second. In the county council elections we increased the size of our county council group and remain the largest opposition party. There are no Labour or UKIP councillors on either Fenland or East Cambs District Councils and no Labour or UKIP councillors in either Fenland or East Cambs district areas. Only the Liberal Democrats can challenge the Conservatives locally.

Around 20,000 people joined the Liberal Democrats nationally after the 2015 General Election and more than 30,000 more have joined since the EU referendum in June 2016 to take membership to over 100,000 nationally.

On the face of it, this seems like a major concession. But the reality is it simply isn't good enough.

First of all, David Davis has said that even if Parliament votes down the deal, the UK will still leave the EU. This means MPs are essentially being told to take it or leave it.

Secondly, the government is agreeing to give MPs a say on the final Brexit deal but not the public.

The Liberal Democrats have agreed to cross party proposals which will see an independent grievance process, improved HR support, and the establishment of a cross-party working group to implement these changes.

Following the meeting Vince Cable, Leader of the Liberal Democrats said:

"These are the right first cross-party steps to address harassment and abuse in Westminster. There needs to be a robust, independent complaints system across Parliament that offers victims a safe, non-partisan procedure."

Comments made today on Twitter by Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein highlight very real concerns about the threat of Brexit to our financial sector.

The UK financial services industry generates over £65 billion in tax revenue each year. That is vital funding for our schools and hospitals that would be lost if companies move jobs and operations abroad.
